Happy July, folks! Summer is upon us: the sun is shining longer, the birds are singing louder, and I’m trying not to melt into a puddle of sweat… too much? Anyway, apparently International Joke Day is a thing, and it is celebrated each year in the first of July. So, happy holidays to you all!
Apparently the holiday (if you can call it that) was created by author and graphic novelist Wayne Reinagel in 1994 as a way to promote his joke books.
I’m a lover of laughter and thought that I would take this time to share some of my favorite jokes by some of my favorite comedians to keep the light-heartedness and happiness of this celebration afloat.
(Note: some of these are going to be explicit, sorry mom!)
And whether of not these are your cup of tea, find something that makes you laugh and share it with your peers not only today, but going forward. We gotta make each other laugh a little, right?
1. “White People at the Beach” – Michelle Buteau
So I guess the video won’t show as a preview in the browser because it’s off Comedy Central and not Youtube, but you should watch this clip anyway. I’m not laughing because it’s funny, I’m laughing because it’s true.
2. “The Salt and Pepper Diner” – John Mulaney
I’m a fan of long, anecdotal comedy and Mulaney has been one of my favorite comedians for quite some time now. Every so often I mentally plan trips to Chicago in hopes he’ll be there singing “What’s New, Pussycat?”
3. “First Day of School” – Jo Koy
My mom probably had a similar story with one of her kids, probably with less expletives.
4. Mindy Kaling on Ellen
I love Mindy. I love Ellen. I know technically this isn’t standup, but they’re both hilarious and they make me happy. (Also this is my list, so I feel like I can assign leeway where I want.)
5. “Google (Not Knowing)” – Pete Holmes
I’ve recently started listening to Pete Holmes…and by that, I mean I’ve only listened to both his standup albums available on Spotify about five times each, but this is one of my favorite clips of his. Aside from making me laugh, it also makes me more conscious of each time I go to open Safari on my iPhone.
So that’s my list of laughter! What’s on yours?
